It’s in my DNA. My grandmother graduated from college in 1940. She taught at NC State, supporting my grandfather as he attended on the GI bill. She later became the first female department head in the English department at Lamar University, where she taught British Literature. She sent my mom to her alma mater, Meredith College, and my mom would go on to earn her master’s degree. They paved the way, shattering glass ceilings for me. I honored that legacy by naming my daughter Meredith. My mother and grandmother always taught me that my education would shape me, provide security, and open doors. They were right. I loved the application process so much that I printed my responses (name, address) on clear Avery labels and placed them seamlessly on my paper application to Colorado State University. While in school, I discovered a knack for making 4-year graduation plans and provided this service to my peers. In hindsight, these were the first moves of Southeast College Consulting. I started my career teaching high school students, working in school administration, and finally taking an internship in mentorship training. I surprised myself when a friend asked me what my dream job was, and I responded with, “I’d love to walk students through the college application process, but I’m not really qualified.” She quickly quipped, “Get qualified then.” By the end of the week, I had registered for the Independent Educational Consultant program at the University of California-Irvine. I spent two years soaking up every bit of my education. Upon graduation, I became a member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association, committed to upholding the highest ethical standards and to ongoing training. I have 9 application seasons under my belt and have served as the Chair for the Georgia Regional Group for IECA. I meet twice weekly with a cohort of the best IEC’s in the business.
